For many years as a physician I practiced Emergency Medicine and always practiced and taught in “Inner city Level One Trauma Centers”. These centers are fast paced, high volume and high acuity: In short, the working environment is not for the faint of heart. No one works here for glory, power, and certainly not money. This is a labor of sequestered Love, a Passion and a Call.
These centers serve as the Mecca for service to all and regardless of position or power or notability, no one is treated differently, all take their order of priority under the" law of triage”. Patients are stripped down to hospital gowns (“please leave the opening in the back") and long waits provoked by triage protocol and shear volume, make for a very interesting workday. Most days the conditions under which the staff and physicians practice their multidimensional skills are performed in "combat" like settings. There are not enough resources, long hours, and too much time is spent  on relentless navigation through a failing system.
From the outside looking in it “appears to be complete chaos”.
Yet at the end of the day, of the shift, of the moment, of a snap shot in time ...  All was well and All received exactly what they needed, guided by the” law of triage” and the awareness of the complete picture.
Focus and direction requires in the “present moment” decisions each “moment” or each  “experience” to be tempered with a touch of humor and most importantly a “Detached Compassionate Presence”, so that Order from Chaos can be created.
To Be that Detached yet Compassionate Presence IS what allows and enables you to maintain a Center of Calm, so that your innate instincts and wisdom of what “to do” in each moment reveals the clarity required of the next moment's decision.
It is with the intent to have and hold Awareness of the Whole picture, while Engaging Fully in the present moment  … That is the ticket ...
As an empath to master this skill was a necessary tool for ER survival.
So here it is Straight Up!
It doesn’t matter who or what role you are playing … a mother, a teacher, the boss, an employee, or a citizen of Humanity, in any situation if you plug into the moment ...
The parallels of “Tales from the ER” are no different.
The times we are experiencing now all require the same skill set. The same rules of engagement and The same rules of Triage and that’s what I call, from my own experience … “Detached Compassionate Presence”.
Till next time -

  1. Fantastic. Love the blog on food and it's relationship to the cells.
My favorite... your words say it all:
